Nijam – an exaggeration

I happened to watch couple of Nijam (A crime report broadcasted in SUN tv) shows, and felt is it utterly against the name, it is a show of paper tiger, based on some real facts, it may be contradictory, some one might feel I’m trying to be sarcastic, but that’s not the fact.

What a they show is real, however what they say is little more exaggerated, thrusting their personal opinions to viewers, as mentioned in my pervious blogs, they not only decide what we see, now they also decide how and what we think. Is it not fatal, for me it seems to be, let me give you an example how fatal it is?

On Wednesday (April 7, 2010), the show (Nijam) was reporting about a leopard in Vaalparai area, the show presenter interviewed few localities who are affected by this leopard, interviewed the parents whose kids were killed by this leopard, interviewed few victims who portrayed the leopard as a demon from hell. You probably think that I’m speaking nuisance or pooh-poohing feelings of parents who lost their children to leopard or victims who lost their limbs, but sincerely I’m not, I’m sorry for the affected. But at the same time I’m very sorry for the leopard, it just did what it is meant for?

It is not, there fault to inhabit in leopard’s area; a human can live in 600 sq ft area, and can buy food for printed paper and store them for years, but its not the case for a leopard, for a leopard to survive it requires at least 100 SQ Kilometers, its not because it requires a lavishly big living room, with Queen size bedroom and all. It needs that area for its food to survive so that it can hunt, when human inhabits, which reduces the survivability of its food, and so human becomes its food. Is it not quite natural? It is.

You questioned its survivability by reducing its food, so it is questioning your survivability, again not to challenge you but for its survivability, but Nijam totally proscribed this truth, and prescribed the capture of the animal, thank god, it didn’t tell to kill it, but I don’t understand what they mean by capturing the animal, do they expect to raise it in captivity or to relocate, if at all they want to relocate it, where? Even in reserve forests humans live, they built their resorts and farm houses to attract tourists, remember the resorts built in the elephant corridor of the mudumaali sanctuary, not all but few encroachments has been removed.

Any which ways, relocation may not guarantee the survivability of the leopard, as it has to study the geography of the land and survey the availability of the food and all, rather if forest officials and government would have taken steps to avoid encroachment, this situation would have avoided, more over if these victims, would have thought with their common sense, that they are encroaching they wouldn’t have lost their kids and limbs.

My point is NIJAM should have interviewed few environmentalist and nature lovers to reveal the reality rather going through their exaggerated presentation, and people are already killing wild animals, once commonly seen sparrows are not seen anymore.

By projecting snakes as venomous creatures, tigers and lions as man-eaters, rather show snakes as farmer’s friend, who eat rodents, tigers and lions as forest friends who checks on herbivorous birth rate.

Not only here, NIJAM always dominates and thrusts its views on the viewers, rather allowing the viewers to think and come out with their own views, unlike other shows (Nadathathu Enna in Vijay tv and all) hope things change.
